Following an overview of the history of British female playwriting, this book explores the themes and concerns that women playwrights associate with women, discussing an array of female characters in plays written between 2000 and 2017, just before the Harvey Weinstein watershed and the global spread of the #MeToo movement. This study of female dramatis personae examines both intentional and incidental circulation of feminist perspectives in drama before 2017, which reflected, testified to, and helped foster a renewed social and political engagement with gender equality.
